Sculpture Maintenance

316 stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, making it ideal for outdoor use and areas near saltwater. Low maintenance with strong resistance to rust or staining. All finishes will require a level of maintenance to maintain its beauty.

Stainless Steel Finishes

Satin / Brushed

  • Wash with Bar Keepers Friend with a Scotch pad, moving with the grain of the metal to avoid extra lines.

  • Rinse thoroughly and dry.

  • For added protection, use Rust Rescue.

Tip: You may wash with Citrisurf to passivate the stainless before applying the Rust Rescue.

High Polish

  • Clean with a soft cloth and Citrisurf cleaner to remove any surface rust.

  • For shine, apply a metal polish (e.g., Renegade), wiping on and then wiping off.

Hand paint

  • Wash the piece first to remove any dirt or residue.

  • Follow with waxing using a microfiber cloth.

Tip: Avoid abrasive cleaners or scrubbing, as this can damage the painted surface.

Powder Coat

  • Treat it like a car: wash once or twice a year with mild soap and water.

  • Rinse thoroughly to avoid soap residue buildup.

  • Apply wax (ceramic wax preferred) for extra protection.

Tip: Avoid harsh abrasives or high-pressure washing, as these can damage the coating.

Other Metal Finishes

Durable metals with a warm, golden tone patina, valued for their elegance and subtle luster. Naturally resistant to weathering, they offer lasting beauty with minimal upkeep and suit a variety of display settings.

Bronze

  • Wash the piece to remove any dirt or residue.

  • Using a microfiber cloth, apply wax and wipe down evenly.

  • Buff lightly for a smooth finish.

Tip: Reapply wax every 6–12 months for maximum protection and shine.

Brass

Best for indoor or low-exposure environments, as it can tarnish over time. Outdoor pieces should be sealed with clear urethane or wax

  • Wash to remove dust or dirt.

  • Apply a wax or urethane coat with a microfiber cloth to maintain shine and prevent tarnishing.

Corten

Weathering steel that naturally develops a rust-like patina when exposed to air and moisture. Extremely durable for outdoor use, but not ideal for coastal areas — salt can break down the protective layer over time.

  • Zero maintenance required if you prefer the natural weathered look.

  • For a rich, dark, even appearance:

    • Rub with urethane clear or Floetrol (latex-based recommended for a satin finish.

    • Apply once a year using a microfiber cloth.

    • Penetrol slows down further rusting.

  • For the best long-term protection:

    • Use ProtectaClear, a rub-on clear coat.
